Finding your ancestors

If you are trying to trace your ancestors and know that they are associated with one of our churches, there are a number of places that you can look to find more information. They may have been entered into the Parish Registers of Baptism, Marriage or Burial or there may be a record of their grave in the churchyard. Before setting out to examine the registers it is important to have as much information as possible about them, particularly dates of birth and death, where they lived and their full name if you can.

The majority of our registers dating back more than ten years are held in the archives at the Borthwick Institute at the University of York for safekeeping and we do not have immediate access to them. Please follow the links below for further information.
